What you are missing…
The longevity clinic, Biograph, has opened in NYC. It is hard to not come across testimonials by celebrities and influencers about how proactive health scans have saved their lives, but there is a catch. A paper published in JAMA analyzed nearly 1,000 Instagram and TikTok posts about five popular medical tests which can all do more harm than good to healthy people, including the full-body MRI scan. The five tests were full-body MRI, Multicancer Early Detection (MCED) test, Antimüllerian hormone (AMH) test (fertility-related), gut microbiome test & a testosterone test. The stats are fairly disturbing: 87.1% of posts highlighted the benefits of these tests.
Only 14.7% mentioned any potential harms (e.g., false positives, unnecessary treatments).
Just 6.1% of posts discussed overdiagnosis or overuse risks.
83.8% had a promotional tone, often encouraging viewers to get tested.
6.4% of posts included scientific evidence, while 33.9% used personal anecdotes as persuasion.
