Nature: Mind-reading devices are revealing the brain’s secrets
A new class of cancer treatments, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL), which harness the body's immune system to fight tumors, has received accelerated FDA approval. TIL therapy involves extracting immune cells directly from a patient's tumor, then expanding and strengthening these cells outside the body before reintroducing them back into the patient. This process aims to use the patient's immune system to mount a strong and long-lasting defense against cancer, targeting solid tumors which are prevalent in about 90% of cancer cases. The recent FDA accelerated approval of Iovance Biotherapeutics' TIL therapy for melanoma, is priced at $515,000, which brings about questions around scaling.
